Inside HMYOI Cookham Wood

We centre our approach around the needs of the children and young people in our care. We provide opportunities to access the core curriculum subjects, enhance skills, and develop new interests which together prepare them for their future.

Education, training and employment

To support them with their rehabilitation and employment opportunities upon release, all young people at HMYOI Cookham Wood have access to core curriculum and vocational learning. This includes subjects such as:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE)
  • IT
  • Catering
  • Horticulture
  • Painting and decorating

We also hold career fairs throughout the year which provides an excellent opportunity for our young people to network.

Peer mentoring and work placement

Young people can also extend their skills to others in custody via our peer mentoring programme or by attending work placements within the prison. Our barista course is a great example of this where the young people can put their skills into practice on site.

Hear from the Governor

Youth justice workers can have a huge impact on children’s lives. They are responsible for… driving the regime, locking and unlocking people but crucially the youth justice worker is required to be an excellent communicator as they will spend most of their time with the children. The children come with a range of complex needs that we have to deal with, which requires youth justice workers to be a mentor, but also be able to challenge and have authority.
Paul Crossey, Governor at HMYOI Cookham Wood
