Working as a prison officer in a long term high security prison

Long term high security prisons hold prisoners who are serving long sentences.

What’s it like working in a long term high security prison? 

To work in one of the following category A prisons, you will need Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) security clearance. You need to have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years to apply for a CTC check.

You do not need a CTC check to work in one of the following prisons:  

  • HMP Garth – Preston, Lancashire
  • HMP Gartree – Market Harborough, Leicestershire
  • HMP Isle of Wight – Newport, Isle of Wight
  • Lowdham Grange – Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
  • HMP Swaleside – Isle of Sheppey, Kent
