Getting to HMP Isle of Wight (Back to top)

Please bear in mind that, as a prison officer, you will need to work shifts plus some unsocial hours and public holidays when public transport may not be running.

If you don’t live on the Isle of Wight, you will need to catch a ferry to the island from Portsmouth, Southampton or Southsea. Please visit the Wight Link or Red Funnel website for ferry times and ticket prices.

The prison isn’t near the ferry ports so you will need to plan your onward journey to ensure you arrive in time for your shift.

While there is a bus service on the island, please bear in mind that buses don’t generally meet the ferries and the service is limited in the early mornings and late evenings. This can add an hour to an hour and a half to your travelling time to the prison.

Isle of Wight prison is about 5 miles from Cowes and 7 miles from Ryde. There is plenty of onsite parking for staff at the prison.

There are many things I enjoy about working at HMP Isle of Wight, but the sense of camaraderie among the wing teams is a real highlight. The strong support network for both staff and prisoners also makes a big difference and creates a positive working environment.

When I joined the Prison Service, I expected the transition to be tough, but the welcoming nature of my colleagues made all the difference. From day one, I was supported by a team that valued collaboration and growth, which helped me adapt quickly to an unpredictable environment.

Today, I see real opportunities for progression, and with the encouragement of my line manager, I feel proud to have laid a strong foundation for a long and rewarding career in this ever-changing prison service.”
