In the heart of picturesque Norfolk and just 2 miles from the vibrant cathedral city of Norwich, HMP Norwich is a training and resettlement prison, plus a Young Offender Institution (YOI) accommodating 750 adult male offenders.
Comprising 3 adjacent but separate sites, it has:
- a reception unit for new prisoners
- a training facility for category B and C prisoners
- an open resettlement wing for category D prisoners
Inside HMP Norwich
To reduce their risk of reoffending when they return to their communities, prisoners at HMP Norwich engage in purposeful activities. The prison delivers these in partnership with a range of education, physical and mental health organisations.
Through the dedicated onsite unit, prisoners have access to a range of education opportunities including:
- basic skills (literacy and numeracy)
- key work skills
- social and life skills
- vocational courses such as basic food hygiene, health and safety and painting and decorating
HMP Norwich has 3 gyms which provide prisoners with opportunities to gain accredited gym instructor qualifications.
The prison also has links with a number of commercial organisations that offer prisoners work and an opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications in onsite workshops. These include printing, textiles and contract packing services.
With a focus on offenders’ psychosocial wellbeing, partner agency Phoenix Futures provides assessment and therapeutic support for men with drug and alcohol problems.

How to get to HMP Norwich
With good road links, HMP Norwich is just 2 miles outside Norwich and there’s ample onsite parking for staff. The prison is a 30-minute drive from Great Yarmouth and just over an hour from King’s Lynn.
HMP/YOI Norwich also has good public transport links. Trains run regularly into Norwich station and a number of buses run from the city centre to the prison. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from Norwich.
