About HMP Stocken

Set in rural surroundings, nine miles from the market town of Oakham, HMP Stocken is a men’s category C training prison in East Midlands.

Accommodating up to 1,056 prisoners, the prison provides a range of education and training opportunities for men to increase their chances of employment when they return to their communities.

Inside HMP Stocken

While at HMP Stocken, prisoners have access to a range of education, training and work opportunities. The focus of these is to help individuals develop new skills to reduce their risk of reoffending when they return to their communities.

Improving prisoners’ chances of employment

To increase their chances of employment, men can:

  • study part-time or full-time for a wide range of vocational courses including painting and decorating, catering, plumbing, bricklaying, and barbering
  • work in a number of onsite work areas including a DHL warehouse and in packaging, recycling, laundry and horticulture teams
  • gain work-related qualifications and practical skills such as timekeeping, teamwork and effective communication
  • attend the onsite employment hub when they’re nearing their prison release date so they can focus on getting themselves ‘job ready’ and looking at job opportunities in their communities

Working in partnership

The onsite gym offers health and fitness related qualifications for prisoners. Working in partnership with coaches from Leicester City Football Club, HMP Stocken is also a national pilot site for the Twinning Project (opens in a new tab). As well as helping them develop coaching, communication and teamwork skills, the project also supports prisons to gain national qualifications in English.

Rutland County Council supports HMP Stocken’s bicycle repair workshop by providing bikes from local recycling centres which prisoners refurbish for donation back to the community.

Support for veterans

Through a partnership with The Royal British Legion and neighbouring barracks, veterans are able to access specific support to address their needs while in custody.
