About HMP Swinfen Hall
HMP Swinfen Hall is a category C training prison and Young Offender Institution.
Surrounded by woodland, it’s just outside the historic village of Swinfen in Staffordshire.
The prison houses 624 male prisoners between the ages of 18 and 28, many who have complex rehabilitation needs and are serving long sentences.
Inside HMP Swinfen Hall
To ensure they get the most out of their time in custody, all HMP Swinfen Hall’s prisoners are given a personal sentence plan. Depending on individual needs, the plans comprise of:
- education and training courses
- purposeful activities, such as onsite work experience
- specialist offending behaviour or psychological treatment programmes
Each of these is designed to reduce an individual’s risk of reoffending when they return to their communities.
Education, training and employment
Prisoners at HMP Swinfen Hall have access to a wide range of education and vocational opportunities – including core curriculum subjects such as Maths and English, and food safety and horticultural qualifications.
HMP Swinfen Hall works in partnership with local and national employers to help prisoners learn new skills to increase their chances of employment when released from custody:
- a local charity has an onsite workshop where prisoners repair and refurbish bicycles
- prisoners produce panels for a fencing company
Prisoners also work in other onsite workshops, which helps them learn a variety of new skills including upholstery, tailoring, grounds maintenance and waste management.
Mental health and therapeutic interventions
With a focus on supporting and treating prisoners’ mental health, HMP Swinfen Hall has a specialist therapeutic wing, which caters for the needs of prisoners with personality disorders.

How to get to HMP Swinfen Hall
With plenty of on-site parking, HMP Swinfen Hall is easily accessible by car. With good road links, it’s just 3 miles from Lichfield, 15 minutes from Sutton Coldfield and about 30 minutes from Walsall and Birmingham.
The closest station is Lichfield, which is a 3-mile taxi ride from the prison.
