Get your career off to a great start by working away from home for 23 months

Are you applying for your first prison officer role and happy to work away from home? Joining one of our busier prisons will help you gain a wealth of experience and make a positive impact early on in your career.

By choosing to join a prison that is 75 minutes (90 minutes in London) or more from where you currently live, you’ll:

  • get higher take-home pay than is available via our standard prison officer recruitment process
  • start your paid training sooner than you would if you applied via our standard application process
  • start at the same time as other new prison officers – a great opportunity to begin your career with a group of like-minded people

About the scheme

Choose to apply to work in either a male prison or female prison:

  • select up to 3 preferences if you want to work in a male prison
  • or select your order of preference if choosing to work in a female prison

Wherever possible, we will aim to find you a role at one of your selected choices. You’ll be allocated to a prison that has the most need for prison officers at the time. After 23 months, you can decide whether to stay at the prison permanently or move to one that’s nearer to your home.

Choice of prisons and salaries

We currently have vacancies in each of the following male and female prisons.

Your pay will depend on which prison you work at and your weekly shift hours. The salaries are based on a 39 hour week. You’ll start on a 37 hour contract until you have completed your initial training. You can then choose to increase your hours to 39 or 41 hours a week.

You’ll also receive an additional £1,500 each year on top of your salary, for 2 years.

Terms of the scheme

I already work as a prison officer. Can I apply to work at another prison under the first time prison officer recruitment scheme?
No. You are only eligible for this scheme if you are applying for your first prison officer position, not if you’re looking to transfer from one prison to another.
Will I have an opportunity to visit the prison before making up my mind whether to accept a job offer?
If you would like an opportunity to visit one or more of your preferred prisons and to meet some current prison officers, we can arrange this for you once you have completed the assessment stage of the application process. You will also need to complete an initial security check at this time.
What’s the maximum time I can be on the first time prison officer recruitment scheme?
You can only apply for your first prison officer position under this scheme and need to stay at your allocated prison for a minimum of 23 months.

You will then be able to:

– ask to stay at your current prison and potentially qualify for a permanent relocation package

– transfer to a prison closer to your permanent home (within 60 to 75 minutes travelling distance)

– transfer to another prison – this will depend on whether there are vacancies at that prison, and you may have to compete with other officers who also wish to transfer

Do I have to move or can I commute to the prison I’m allocated to?
To be eligible for this scheme, the travelling time to the prison you’ll be initially working at needs to be 75 minutes (90 minutes in London) or more. Commuting will likely be impractical on an ongoing, long-term basis due to the variable shift patterns prison officers must work.
Will I get help to find accommodation?
It will be your responsibility to find your accommodation for the period you’ll be working away from home.

– We will book and pay for you to stay in a hotel for the first 30 nights you are away from home

– Accommodation will also be provided during your prison officer foundation training. Wherever possible, your training will be at our Newbold Revel residential college near Rugby in Warwickshire

– It will be your responsibility to find accommodation to move into after you’ve completed your training

– If, while you’re on your foundation course, you need to spend time at the weekends finalising your accommodation, you will be able to request that your travel and accommodation costs for this period are reimbursed

What if I decide to leave before I’ve worked at the prison for 23 months?
You will need to let your line manager know that you wish to resign and you’ll need to work your notice period.

You will not qualify for the additional £1,500 you would have received on top of your salary for that year. Plus, you will not be able to apply for another prison officer role under the first time prison officer recruitment scheme.

What if there isn’t a vacancy at my local prison after 23 months?
You will be guaranteed a prison officer role at a prison that is closest to your home. If there isn’t an immediate vacancy at your local prison, we will work with you to identify another one that’s within travelling distance.

Pay and benefits

How much will I be paid?
You will benefit from higher take-home pay than is available via our standard prison officer recruitment process.

On top of to your salary, you’ll get:

– an additional £1,500 each year for 2 years (paid at the end of each year, not as part of your monthly salary)

– an opportunity to earn more through our ‘Payment Plus’ scheme (see below for more information)

– your accommodation costs paid for up to 23 months (up to £659 per month in London and £589 per month elsewhere)

– to claim the cost of a monthly trip home

The salaries are based on a 39 hour week and include an unsocial hours allowance. You’ll start on a 37 hour contract until you have completed your initial training. You will then be able to choose to increase your hours to 39 or 41 hours a week.

At what point will I know what my basic starting salary will be?
Your starting salary will depend on which prison you are allocated to. It will be confirmed in your provisional offer.
What is ‘Payment Plus’?
‘Payment Plus’ is a special payment offered at a select number of prisons.

Due to staffing needs, you are likely to have an opportunity to volunteer to work extra hours at your initial prison if you wish to do so. Any hours that you volunteer to work over your contractual hours will be paid as ‘Payment Plus’. This is currently paid at a rate of £22 per hour.

Will I be able to claim mileage to reimburse the cost of my monthly trip home?
If have business use cover on your vehicle insurance you will be able to claim mileage via our expenses process.
Will I be able to claim my removal costs?
No. You will however be able to claim your accommodation costs for up to 23 months when you start work at the prison you’re allocated to.
How much can I claim for accommodation once I’ve moved closer to the prison I’m allocated to?
We will pay your accommodation costs up to £659 per month in London, or up to £589 per month elsewhere, for up to 23 months. You may also have an option to claim for ‘second home’ council tax and your water utility bills if you live in shared accommodation. You will need to apply for this via your local council.
Will my accommodation costs be paid while I’m training?
Yes. Wherever possible, your prison officer foundation course will be held at one of our residential training centres. If your training is at a non-residential centre, your accommodation costs will be reimbursed unless you are living within daily travelling distance.
Will I stay on the same pay if I move to a prison closer to my permanent home after 23 months?
Not necessarily. You will be paid the salary the prison you move to offers. This will depend on where in the country the prison is.

You will no longer be eligible to claim your accommodation costs or the additional £1,500 per year that’s payable for the first 2 years under the first time prison officer recruitment scheme.

If a market supplement is payable at your initial prison, this will stop when you start at your permanent prison.

How can I find out how much I will be paid when I start work at another prison?
Visit our benefits and training webpage for details of the current prison officer salary details for each of the HMPPS prisons.
If I decide to stay at the prison after 23 months, will I still be able to claim my accommodation costs?
No, you won’t be able to continue claiming accommodation costs. However, you may be entitled to financial help to move to the area permanently. This will be at the discretion of the prison’s governor and group director.

Choice of prisons

Are all prisons included in the scheme?
No. The first time prison officer scheme is available at a number of our busier prisons across England and Wales that currently have the most need for prison officers. The current list is subject to change depending on prison needs.
Why are there fewer women’s prisons to choose from?
The first time prison officer recruitment scheme is available only at the prisons which currently have the most need for prison officers.
Can I apply to both male and female prisons?
Yes you can, but you will have to submit an application for each. This is because there’s an additional stage to the application process to work in a female prison. Find out more about working in a female prison.
How many prisons can I choose to apply to?
Under the first time prison officer recruitment scheme, you can choose up to 3 you’d like to work at, in order of preference.
Can I choose to apply to a combination of male and female prisons?
There are two adverts for the first time prison officer scheme: one for male prisons, and one for female prisons. You will need to submit an application for both of them if you are interested in applying to both male and female prisons. There’s not an option to select a combination when applying to just one of them.
Can I apply to work at any of the prisons on the first time prison officer recruitment scheme?
You can only apply to prisons that are 75 minutes or more (90 minutes in London) travelling time from your home to be eligible for the benefits that are available under this scheme. This is generally equivalent to over 100 miles from your home.
How will I know if I’m eligible to apply for a role at a particular prison on the first time prison officer recruitment scheme list?
Your travel time from home to the prison must be 75 minutes or more (90 minutes in London). This will be calculated using an online route planner, and generally be equivalent to more than 100 miles.

We will let you know if your prison choices don’t meet these criteria. You will have then an opportunity to:

– amend your choices

– or apply directly to your preferred prison(s) via our standard application process

If you choose option 2, you won’t be eligible to claim any of the financial incentives specific to this scheme.

What if I’d like to work at one of the prisons on the first time prison officer recruitment scheme list that’s 75 minutes or less travelling time from my home?
You can apply via our standard recruitment process, but you won’t be eligible to claim any of the financial incentives specific to this scheme.
If my application is successful, am I guaranteed a role at one of my prison choices?
Wherever possible, we will aim to find you a role at one of your first 3 choices of prison. If this isn’t possible, we will offer you a position at another prison that has an immediate need for prison officers.
If I don’t want to work at the prison I’m offered a role at, can I choose another one on the first time prison officer recruitment scheme list?
When you apply, you will have an opportunity to select 3 prisons you would like to work at, and we will aim to offer you a position at one of these. If you choose not to accept a role, you may not be offered an additional choice and your application may end.

Application process

Why are there separate applications for male and female prisons?
Working with women in custody has some specific challenges you may not face in a male prison. Women in custody have often had extremely difficult backgrounds: many have experienced emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. This can lead to a lack of trust in staff.

There’s an additional stage to the prison officer application process – an online assessment – to explore your understanding of what the implications of this are on working in a female prison.

If your application to work in a female prison is successful, you will receive additional specialist training to work effectively with women prisoners. Find out more about working at a female prison.

What support will I get during the application process?
You will have access to a named contact in our recruitment team for any questions you may have, and we will do all we can to make the process as quick as possible. Prior to you starting, we will also put you in contact with the team at the prison you will be working at to give you an opportunity to speak to them.
If I fail the additional assessment needed to work in a female prison, can I be considered for a role in a male prison?
Yes. If you pass the online assessment centre, we will contact you to see if you’d be interested in working in one of the male prisons. You will then be able to select which 3 prisons you’d prefer to work at.
When will I know which prison I’ll be working at?
Once you’ve successfully passed your online assessment centre, we will send you a provisional offer – which will be subject to you passing your pre-employment checks.

We will aim to offer you a prison officer role at one of your first 3 choices of prison.

How soon after applying can I expect to start my new job?
The standard prison officer application process generally takes 6 to 7 months from when you start your application to day 1 on the job.

As the prisons on the first time prison officer recruitment scheme list have an ongoing need for prison officers, you should be able to start sooner than this. This will depend on how long your pre-employment checks take, and how soon you can leave your current job.

Typically, pre-employment checks take 6 to 7 weeks. You will have access to our recruitment team for any support you might need throughout the process, and we will do all we can to make it as quick as possible.

Find tips and more information about each stage of the prison officer application process.

Will I get the same training before I start working in a prison as I would if I was applying directly to a prison outside this scheme?
Yes. You will begin your prison officer career by completing a 2 week induction at your initial prison and then you will complete the prison officer foundation course at one of our training sites.
