Skills you need

You do not need any qualifications to do this job. Helping to keep a prison running smoothly and safely requires good judgement, common sense, responsibility and, above all, teamwork.

Skills

You should:

  • have basic maths, spelling and grammar skills
  • speak fluent English, or Welsh (in Wales, where specified)
  • be able to read the time in 24-hour format
  • have clear and legible handwriting
  • have basic IT skills, and experience using MS Word and email

To be an OSG, you need to be:

  • responsible and trustworthy
  • collaborative and like to work as part of a team
  • confident, warm and welcoming
  • a problem solver who remains calm under pressure
  • detail-orientated and follow rules and processes closely
