Long term high security prisons hold prisoners who are serving long sentences.
What’s it like working in a long term high security prison?
To work in one of the following category A prisons, you will need Counter Terrorism Check (CTC) security clearance. You need to have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years to apply for a CTC check.

- HMP Full Sutton – York
- HMP Long Lartin – Evesham, Worcestershire
- HMP Manchester – Manchester, North West England
- HMP Wakefield – Wakefield, West Yorkshire
- HMP Woodhill – Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire
- HMP Whitemoor – Near March, Cambridgeshire
You do not need a CTC check to work in one of the following prisons:
- HMP Garth – Preston, Lancashire
- HMP Gartree – Market Harborough, Leicestershire
- HMP Isle of Wight – Newport, Isle of Wight
- Lowdham Grange – Nottingham, Nottinghamshire
- HMP Swaleside – Isle of Sheppey, Kent
