Don’t wait for a position to come up at your preferred prison or Young Offender Institution (YOI) – work away from home for 23 months and be guaranteed a place there after this time.
About the Futures recruitment scheme
This scheme is only available at a select number of prisons and YOIs.
While you may need to wait some time for a prison officer or youth justice worker vacancy to come up at your local prison or YOI, you’ll be able to start your new career sooner if you apply under this scheme.
You can only apply under this scheme if you’re applying for your first prison officer or youth justice worker role.
You’ll apply to your local prison or YOI, but spend your first 23 months working at another site. You’ll get great additional benefits while you’re there.
After you have worked away from home for 23 months, you are guaranteed a permanent job back at the prison or YOI you initially applied for. Your pay will change to match the salaries paid at that location.
Benefits
As well as the great benefits you get from being a part of HMPPS, you’ll get:
- an additional £1,500 each year on top of your salary, for 2 years
- an opportunity to earn more through our ‘Payment Plus’ scheme (an additional payment for any hours you volunteer to work over your contractual hours)
- your accommodation costs (up to £659 per month in London or up to £589 elsewhere) paid for up to 23 months
- the cost of a monthly trip home repaid
- comprehensive paid training and career progression opportunities
