We welcome and encourage applications from all candidates. We are committed to supporting all candidates to take part in the recruitment process.
The Ministry of Justice is a Disability Confident employer, committed to ensuring that all our employees have an opportunity to demonstrate their skills, talent and abilities.
This starts at the point of application, where we offer reasonable adjustments to candidates when they apply for one of our jobs. During the application process, we will ask you if you need reasonable adjustments and it is important you tell us as early as possible if you do.
What is a reasonable adjustment?
A reasonable adjustment is a change to any part of the assessment process that removes or reduces a disadvantage that might prevent certain people from effectively applying for a job.
The aim is to ensure a fair and accessible process by supporting candidates to perform to their potential on any test or assessment exercise.
Do you need a reasonable adjustment?
Our Reasonable Adjustments Scheme supports individuals who may face disadvantages in the assessment process when applying for one of our jobs due to a diagnosed or undiagnosed disability, long-term condition, or a short-term need arising from an illness or injury.
For example, we can provide reasonable adjustments if you:
- have dyslexia and need additional time to complete reading or writing tasks
- have a visual impairment and need any assessment-related text to be presented in a larger font size
- have a physical disability or injury and need longer breaks to stretch and relieve muscle tension
These are just some examples of the adjustments we can provide.
If you feel that you may need a reasonable adjustment during your application, we will work with you to address your needs as best we can.
How do you apply for a reasonable adjustment?
Simply select the ‘yes’ option in the application form when it asks if you think you might need a reasonable adjustment. We will then contact you to confirm your eligibility and agree on any adjustments we can offer.
Our goal is to make our application process fair for everyone, and you will not be penalised or judged for applying for a reasonable adjustment.
It is essential that you arrange your reasonable adjustment support before any test, interview, or assessment exercise you need to complete. This will help us ensure you have the right support in place when you need it.
What reasonable adjustments are available?
We can offer a range of reasonable adjustments to help you during the job application process, including:
- Extra time to help you complete any timed exercises, including interviews, written tests, and reading. You could also have an extended break between exercises.
- A staff member to read assessment materials aloud or write out your spoken answers on any test that requires a written response.
- Providing the main interview questions in written format as the interviewers ask them. Plus, we can give you some of the questions a short time before the interview to help you become familiar with the style of questions.
- Giving you an opportunity to complete the interview or other assessment exercises at a suitable time, such as during a morning or afternoon slot – if possible.
