About HMP Foston Hall

Set in a rural location, 3 miles from the hamlet of Foston, HMP Foston Hall is a small, local women’s resettlement prison.

It accommodates up to 284 prisoners, including women who are on remand and others who are serving a range of sentences.

The prison provides opportunities for individuals to learn new skills to empower them make positive changes in their lives when they return to their communities.

Inside HMP Foston Hall

With the aim of helping prisoners increase their chances of employment when they return to their communities, HMP Foston Hall provides access to a wide range of education and training opportunities.

Addressing the specific needs of women in prison

Many of HMP Foston Hall’s prisoners have led challenging or traumatic lives that triggered their offending. The approach that staff take when working with these women is to provide a range of interventions to empower them to change and turn their lives around when they leave custody. This includes:

  • a range of offending behaviour programmes that help tackle the behaviours that led to their offending
  • opportunities to gain qualifications, including in core curriculum subjects such as Maths and English
  • work placements in the onsite gardens, kitchens, workshops and gym, which can lead to vocational qualifications

The prison also has a dedicated family bonding unit which provides opportunities for women to have facilitated visits, sharing time with their children in a more normalised environment.

HMP Foston Hall aims to ensure that no woman leaves the prison without accommodation to go to.

How to get to HMP Foston Hall

With good road links and ample free onsite parking, HMP Foston Hall is in easy reach of Derby, Stoke-on-Trent and Uttoxeter, which are all around half an hour away. You can also drive from Leicester and Nottingham in less than an hour.

Trains from Stoke-on-Trent and Derby stop at Hatton/Tutbury, which is 3 miles from HMP Foston Hall.
