Inside HMP Foston Hall

Addressing the specific needs of women in prison

Many of HMP Foston Hall’s prisoners have led challenging or traumatic lives that triggered their offending. The approach that staff take when working with these women is to provide a range of interventions to empower them to change and turn their lives around when they leave custody. This includes:

  • a range of offending behaviour programmes that help tackle the behaviours that led to their offending
  • opportunities to gain qualifications, including in core curriculum subjects such as Maths and English
  • work placements in the onsite gardens, kitchens, workshops and gym, which can lead to vocational qualifications

The prison also has a dedicated family bonding unit which provides opportunities for women to have facilitated visits, sharing time with their children in a more normalised environment.

HMP Foston Hall aims to ensure that no woman leaves the prison without accommodation to go to.
