Skills and qualifications you need

To work as a HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) psychologist, you’ll need:

  • a great deal of compassion and perspective to work with complex individuals
  • to be resilient, non-discriminatory and non-judgemental
  • to have good analytical skills
  • to be a good team player
  • be able to influence others

Qualifications

Qualified psychologist roles

If you’re applying for a position as a qualified psychologist, you need to be (one of the following):

  • qualified and registered as a practitioner psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • in the process of registering and be able to provide proof of registration within 3 months of accepting a provisional offer

Trainee psychologist roles

If you’re applying for a trainee forensic psychologist role, you’ll need:

  • a psychology degree conferring Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC) of the British Psychological Society (BPS), and a BPS accredited MSc in Forensic Psychology
  • to have passed your MSc and checked it meets BPS accreditation standards to enter ‘Stage 2’ of your forensic training
